Free to love

Abstract

Someone is free only when they distinguish freedom from abandon, i.e. spontaneity that guides small children’s behavior. Freedom is the ability to make responsible decisions based on the right hierarchy of values and objective moral norms. The minimum of freedom is to comply with the Decalogue, i.e. with the fundamental norms of natural law. The maximum of freedom is to decide for love and follow Jesus. Love is the most mature and responsible way of acting, but also the ability to make long-term decisions, because love is an irrevocable attitude, independent of the passage of time, existential circumstances or changing emotional states.
